Chapter Five

Ash stroked a finger down the centre of Sam’s chest. A smattering of dark hair covered his pecs, and Ash traced it as it thinned into a line down to his groin. He stopped when he reached the hard planes of Sam’s stomach and grinned at Sam’s disappointed sigh.

“I’m going to the barn,” Matt shouted, unnecessarily, from down in the kitchen. “Try and be done by lunchtime.”

Sam grinned and shouted back. “No promises!”

Ash buried his head in Sam’s shoulder, cheeks no doubt red and telling.

They heard Matt laughing and cursing as the door opened and closed, followed by the crunch of his footsteps as he walked over to the barn.

And then silence.

Ash fidgeted, suddenly aware that Sam was totally naked and half-hard. Not that that was new, Sam had been like that since they’d woken up, but the others had been in the house then, so they’d had to behave. Maybe that wasn’t strictly true, but Ash didn’t fancy having an audience. Especially not for their first time together.

“You okay?” Sam asked, tilting Ash’s chin up with his finger so that their gazes met. “You’ve gone tense.”

He was right.

Ash had been lying half draped over Sam, idly stroking his chest two minutes before, and now they had the place to themselves, he’d pulled away a little and had frozen in place. He was nervous. The last time Ash had been with anyone, it hadn’t turned out well. If he was being honest, it had been a bit of a disaster, and the memory still stung.

He’d not even done that much with the guy, just a casual hook-up in some bar a few months ago. Ash wasn’t what you’d call experienced—he didn’t particularly like meeting new people—and it obviously showed. He’d been nervous then, too, and his fumbling and clumsiness had obviously been a turn-off. The guy had left him in the toilets with an apologetic smile and “Sorry, it’s just not working for me.”

Ash had been mortified. It had taken him a good twenty minutes to venture out of the toilets, and he’d never gone back to that bar. Just in case.

“Hey, Ash?” Sam’s hands smoothed up and down Ash’s back, comforting and warm. “We don’t have to do anything.” He kissed the tip of Ash’s nose and smiled. “I’m more than happy to spend the morning just like this.” He pulled Ash against him so that Ash’s head rested on his shoulder. “This is perfect.”

The last of the tension melted out of Ash, and he relaxed into Sam’s hold. He smelled good. Ash still found that odd—the way everything had a scent, a much more delicate and layered scent than he had ever realised before. It took some getting used to, along with everything else about the change, but Sam had always smelled the same—safe.

“I’m okay,” Ash answered, finally. “Just a little nervous.” Admitting it didn’t feel nearly as embarrassing as he’d anticipated.

Sam laughed softly, jostling Ash where he lay. “You’re not the only one, you know.” He gave Ash a squeeze.
